Description
Annual herb up to 120 cm high, characterized by its oval, dense
inflorescence, 1-6 cm long with numerous and imbricated spicules, whitish
with green nerves. Spicules are very compressed, obovate, 6-10
mm by 6 mm, rigid green glumes winged of the keel, abruptly
contracted in a pointy apex. Leaves are flat and rough, 3-12 mm wide.
It is native to Africa and the Canary Islands (Spain).
Canary grass was introduced to most part of Europe, except of the northern
region. It grows in roadsides, crops and wasteland. It blooms from May to July.
Part used
Seeds.
According to recent research, canary grass seeds
intended for human consumption should not contain silica fibers located in the
external hairs of the husks, since it seems that this type of fiber may produce
esophagus cancer if seeds are taken on a regular basis. Until more research and
references are available, canary grass is recommended to be taken peeled only.
Indications
Hypercholesterolemia and arteriosclerosis.
