YARROW

Achillea millefolium L

Description

It’s a herbaceous, vivacious plant of 40-50 cm high with a ligneous horizontal rhizome. Stem is plain, erect and tomentose. Leaves are lanceolate and pinnately compound with a sharp apex, alternate, clasping the stem at the base and vertical. It has small floral capitules in cymes, formed by white, pink or purple flowers. Capitules form concave beautiful corymbs with a pleasant scent. Fruit is an oval-shaped and compressed achenia with no pappus. It belongs to the Compositae family which are also called Asteraceae.

Its distribution is sub-cosmopolitan and grows in pastures, meadows and nitrated soils.

Indications

Internal use

  • Anorexia, lack of appetite.
  • Digestive disorders: hyposecretive gastritis, dyspepsia, digestive tract spasms, nausea, vomit, intestinal inflammation, diarrhea, flatulence.
  • Hepatobiliary deficiency, dyskinesia, biliary lithiasis, cholelithiasis and cholecystitis.
  • Premenstrual syndrome, menopause, and menstrual disorders: amenorrhea dysmenorrhea, metrorrhages.
  • Fever, common cold.
  • Adjuvant in treating type II diabetes.
  • Vein disorders: varicose veins, hemorrhoids, phlebitis, etc.
  • Other: Vermifugal, neurosis, convulsions, gout, rheumatism, enuresis, etc.

External use

  • Wound healing, skin ulcers, burns, hemorrhages, dermatitis.
  • Hemorrhoids.
  • In sitz baths, it is useful to treat menstrual painful spasms or psychosomatic originated spasms in women pelvis.
  • Tonic lotions (stimulant, astringent), creams and face masks.
  • In other capillary products it is used to inhibit sebaceous secretion.
